Girls Getaway Night Out in Toronto: Dream in High Park

Toronto_596

Thank you CanStage, from this girl and the many women who are really, really enjoying this summer’s production of Romeo and Juliet in Toronto’s High Park.

Dream in High Park Romeo and JulietLadies, gather up your girlfriends; bring a picnic, a bottle of wine and a blanket to see Shakespeare under the stars because this year’s Dream in High Park production is dreamy, very dreamy.

On the night we attended the performance, I noticed that the audience was packed with women. Now, I’ve been going to the Canadian Stage TD productions in High Park for many years and have never before noticed such a discrepancy in the audience demographics until this year.

At first I thought it was because of the play, after all, what woman can resist this tale of star-crossed lovers? As evening fell and the play began, there was a stirring of excitement in the crowd, the actors were making their way onto the stage, and whispers started up in the audience. Jeff Irving, the actor cast in the role of Romeo, appeared onstage and I swear I heard a collective sigh from all around. I overheard one woman, close to me, whisper to her girlfriend “he’s soooo hot.” She was right, this guy is serious eye candy and of course, he’s also a great actor. Toronto_300-2Finally I understood the reason behind the large number of women in attendance! Eye candy aside, the cast put on a wonderful performance. As Shakespeare so famously said “the play’s the thing” and this year’s Dream in High Park delivers.

Canadian Stage’s 28th season at High Park is filled with love and lovers, making this a perfect night out with the girls. Tragic, beautiful, silly, star-crossed, unrequited and out of their minds – they’re all here.

Romeo & Juliet is directed by Dora Award-winner Vikki Anderson (The Doll House, Coyote Ugly)
